Early 19th century sampler by Margaret Cole worked in wool and silk threads.  The upper section features rows of letters and horizontal bands along with Margaret’s name and the date 1831.  The bottom portion features a large floral basket with a fruit basket on either side.  Other motifs include birds, stars, crowns, and hearts.  There is a remnant of an uppercase M on the left, but if Miss Cole stitched a C on the right side, it has long since disappeared.  A berry border encircles the whole.

The linen has age related discoloration and some water spots.  There is some fading to the threads, but the red, blue, black, and brown remain vibrant. Minor stitch loss, most evident in the capital P worked in Algerian eyelet and the heart on the far left. The crown motif on the right appears to have never been finished. It measures 17.25”w x 17”h.
