Anne Jones 1844 Antique Sampler

This swoon-worthy sampler is chock full of motifs including hearts, potted plants, trees, birds, lions, deer, flowers, and a plump fruit basket.  I adore its naive quality!  The colors are ruddy pinks and reds, browns, greens, with a bit of blue and orange.  Our stitcher, Anne Jones, worked her name and Febry 1844 in a cartouche at the bottom.  Her joyful meangerie is enclosed in a strawberry border.  The threads are mostly wool. There are some stitch losses throughout.  The linen has a 2.5" split on the upper left side (see photo detail).  There are also some spots of dried glue and remants of paper around the very edges.  Anne used cross, chain, eyelet and satin stitches to give depth to her work.  The colors have faded a bit.  It is a complete delight!

It measures 25”h x 17”w.
