Elizabeth Ann Howlett 1822 - SOLD

  • Product Code: SA-EHOWLETT
  • Availability: Sold

Elizabeth Ann Howlett worked her sampler with a simple palette of blue, green, and cream cotton threads.  And, oh that shade of blue!!  Alphabets and horizontal bands adorn the upper section.  Towering bluebells flank a central cartouche with Elizabeth's name and birthdate.  Beneath this she worked a lovely variety of flowering and potted plants and a grassy field.  An eyelet border is stitched all around.  Eyelet was also used for the cartouche and some of the horizontal bands.  The remainder is worked in cross stitch.

The linen is a dull, dark tan.  There are some obvious dark stains as well as two small holes just to the right of the central flowering tree.  I've photographed these with white paper behind so you can see them better (see photo#8). There are also remnants of paper stuck to the back of the linen, but they are not visible from the front.

Measures 16.5”h x 16.5”w.
