A simple French marking sampler worked in red cotton threads on tan colored linen. Julie Pellé used cross stitch to work and alphabet andd number at the top and some decorative bands and motifs at the bottom. She stitched her name across the middle along with ROUTE D'ARMES A CLAMECY NIEVRE and the date 1860. Clamecy is a town located north of the Nièvre (Burgundy) where the Yone and Beuvron rivers meet and is also located on the Canal du Nivernais. Historically known for wood floating, it supplied Paris with timber from the 16th to the 19th centuries. Route d'Armes is a road or street within the town.
The linen is sound but there are numerous stains on this old sampler. There are also a few creases where it had been folded. The threadwork remains intact. Hemmed on the top and sides. The bottom is selvage. It measures approximately 8.75"h x 8.25"w.
