Lovely Unfinished Antique Sampler - SOLD

This long, unfinished sampler is worked in a lovely palette of silk and cotton threads.  Four complete alphabets and a set of numbers are worked across the top. The bottom, worked in silks, features a delightful variety of florals, a wreath, a gathering of buildings, a lady, and several gentlemen - one rowing a small boat.  Beautiful, Quaker-like motifs.  Much prettier in person than my photos portray!

There are some small stains and general discoloration to the linen ground. The linen is in otherwise good condition.  There are remnants of paper stuck to the back.  The silk threads have faded beautifully, but we can see on the back that they were once a pale, but colorful palette of pinks, greens, blues, yellows, and browns. Although undated, this sampler was likely stitched in the early 19th century.  It measures 21.5"w x 8.5"h.
