Religious Woolwork Sampler - SOLD

Irma Fournier worked a lovely variety of motifs on her large woolwork sampler, including an altar with the letters J (Jesus) and M (Mary) on either side, potted roses, a sacrifical lamb, a cross, the immaculate and sacred hearts, a woman in a blue dress, a man in a sailboat, and quite a variety of birds and flowers.  Meandering grape and floral vines enclose the whole.  Irma's name is worked at the bottom along with what may be sets of initials.  The date may have been stitched in the lower right corner at one time but thread loss has erased most of it.  Irma worked most of her sampler with cross stitch over 2 threads but she also worked some of her stitches over 1 (see the candlesticks and monstrance and some of the birds in the border).

There is thread here and there - most noticeable in the lower corners as well as the candles.  The linen has overall age related darkening/soiling but it is quite sound.  The color of the linen is best represented in the first photo.  My camera has brightened the linen considerably in the close-up photos of the lamb, altar, and woman's face. Hemmed on the top and bottom.  The back shows how bright the colors of the threads originally were.  Likely late 19th century.  It measures 22.75"w x 19"h.
